Recording from vinyl - background distortion always there

Audacity experts - youve helped me out so succesfully on my previous issues I hope you can do the same on this.
System : Modified Technics SL1210 mk2, Michell tecnoarm, ortofon Nightclub 2 cartridge, Cyrus Phono X phonostage, posh atlas interconnect to Y connector into 3.5mm line-in socket on PC (Athlon 2800 XP, 2.5GB Ram, Nvidia sound board)
Speakers : Bose Companion 5 USB based speaker system
Problem : Either somehow as a result of my recent change of output device from line-out-to-poweramp & speakers to the above Bose device or, simply that with the new USB system I am hearing things I wasnt before, I can now detect a low level of distortion is being driven into the PC and therefore audacity, from the turntable.
This means the recordings which I am trying to make at good quality (hence the expensive-ish source end) and which I am sampling at 48k for max resolution are being undermined.
Ive checked the TT and indeed tried a different one and the problem is still there. On 7" and album vinyl because the gain level is very low, the distortion is really faint. On 12" vinyl you can hear it crackling away in the background.
In the Nvidia mixer system I am using "Stereo mix" as my input because "line in" massively overloads everything and I have the output set very low. On the audacity mixer, the input level is set at max.
When I turn the output on the nvidia mixer down to nothing I can hear the turntable distortion very clearly. As I turn up the output, it gets more drowned out by the actual music to the point where it is inaudible (but must still be there).
I cant understand how but as I'm no expert, is this somehow being caused by using the USB Bose system ? If so, whilst it looks pretty, its going straight back.
