Import WAV problem

Not reproducible with 1.3.9 on Windows XP-HE-SP3 - the import works fine in the "safer" copy in mode - so this could be a just a MAC problem. Any Unix/Linux users out there who can test this?

BTW in using the workaround "faster" option where the audio clip is just referenced and not actually imported, just be very aware that if you move, delete or rename the original audio clip file then you will get a hole in your project.

Exactly what kind of WAV files are they? (16 bit, 24 bit, 44.1kHz, 48kHz....) Are these WAV files that have been exported from Audacity, or from elsewhere?

My file is exported as signed 16bit WAV(microsoft) audio 44.1kHz using Audacity 1.3.9

I just noticed after importing the Track says 24bit PCM. See attachment.

So I just decided to re-export it again, using the "Other uncompressed files" WAV (Microsoft); Signed 24 bit PCM
This file imports via file menu and drag & drop without a problem.

Go into Audacity Preferences (Edit > Preferences) and on the Quality tab, change the Default sample format to 16 bit or 32 bit. I suspect that it is on 24 bit and some Macs are known to have problems with 24 bit audio.

Yeap, it was set to 24 bit in the preferences.

Setting it to 32 bit float worked fine and for good measure I tried 16, it worked as well.

I'm having the same problem! Except your solution doesn't work.
The file is DEFINATLY a wav file, I've checked and checked.
The settings are set to "read directly from the original file,"
but when I import it, all I get is a weird squeaky noise! It's really aggrivating!
Does anyone know what I can do to fix this? I just got audacity, and not being able to work it is driving me insane.
I have Windows XP, and the file is 7.68 MB. I downloaded it off of my ipod using a downloader app, but as I said before, it is DEFINATLY a wav file, when I look in the proporties, it says "WAVE Audio File."

Please help?!

It's not a regular WAV file. If you can open it in Audacity and it plays super fast, then you have a compressed file type that Audacity doesn't understand how to manage.

Download either LRMonoPhase or Piano2 from here and open them in Audacity.

Yes, they both sound fine.
So, how do I make my file sound like this? Is there a way to uncompress it?
I've tried just opening the file, instead of importing it, and it still plays super fast.

Probably your best bet is the free format converter "SUPER" (by erightsoft).
Downloading SUPER is a link jungle, but worth the effort as it can convert most media formats.
As the file appears to be a WAV file (but obviously isn't), it may take a few goes to get SUPER to convert it correctly, but usually it can handle converting audio files to (normal) WAV format automatically.
