Plot Spectrum - Peak or RMS?

Hi,

I'm doing a comparative study into the demos and album versions of songs by the band Arctic Monkeys. I've been using Audacity's plot spectrum feature to compare spectral differences in 4 bar sections, and I like the fact that this information can be displayed logarithmically. Can anyone tell me if the resulting spectra are peak or RMS?

Thanks,

Justin

Sorry Justin I can't answer this - in the meantime you may find it useful to look at this page in the manual that is being developed for the upcoming 1.4 release: http://www.audacityteam.org/manual/inde ... alyze_Menu

I did have a quick read and the article doesn't seem to offer clarification though on what you are asking.

Its not either. They are window functions. The mathematics are rather complicated, but they give a good indication of relative levels without needing to get involved with the complexities of Fast Fourier Transforms.
