Speed up long import times for large wavs?

Hi folks,
I have a bunch of very large wav files (3-5GB) that I need to open and check in Audacity. Chopping them into smaller chunks in Audacity would be nice too. Importing each one into Audacity seems to take about 40 minutes, which means that in one day of work I can deal with maybe 8 of these files... I'd really like to speed this process up.
There was a discussion back here: http://audacityteam.org/forum/viewtopic ... sk=t&sd=a& about a project to allow reading of uncompressed import data without copying, which would allow you to start looking at the file only a few seconds after opening it. Does this option exist yet? I'm running XP at with the 1.3.5 beta.
Otherwise, does anyone know of any good programs that will split up my files into smaller chunks that would do it faster than trying to open them up in Audacity? Linux based options could work here too.
Thanks for your help!
