Overwrite Tracks
Hello !
I've just begun using Audacity, and i have a simple question for you guys.
When i start recording, instead of overwriting a track, it always creates a new one.
This is annoying mainly for one reason, which is that i'd like to be able to have full-length tracks even if i just add a few words to a song.
If if's of any use, i run Audacity both from Ubuntu & Win7.

Re: Overwrite Tracks
You can Transport > Append Record or SHIFT + R to record at the end of the selected track(s):

Re: Overwrite Tracks
Ok, thank you, but this is only for adding to the end of the track, i'd like to add before.
Or rather, i'd like to be able to have my tracks start at time 0 when i export them, even if i didn't start recording them at time zero.
Do you see what i mean ?

Re: Overwrite Tracks
You can export whatever you want by drag-selecting a portion of the show and then File > Export Selection.

Re: Overwrite Tracks
Do you want to export a mix of all the recorded snippets (currently on tracks one above the other) as one file? Or export a single snippet from a track of multiple snippets as Koz explained?
Either if you are exporting a mix, or all of a single track (File > Export Selection), the first content on the Timeline (the first to play) should export at time zero, unless you have mixed and rendered the track so that the space is silence. But in the next 1.3.14 Beta, the Mix and Render will not render the starting space as silence, so the actual audio will still export starting at zero.

Re: Overwrite Tracks
I'm exporting several single tracks, but don't want to mix them, as i'm sending them to someone else who will be mixing them to other instrumental tracks.
He is going to be using all of my 7 tracks into the mix, so he would like them to all start at the same time, so that he doesn't need to manually set them to the right time.
This is why i'd like to export tracks that start at time zero, even if i started recording much later. Is it possible?
Btw, thanks again for the help

What is your full version number of Audacity (for example, 1.3.12) at Help > About Audacity?Brachamul wrote:I'm exporting several single tracks, but don't want to mix them, as i'm sending them to someone else who will be mixing them to other instrumental tracks.

In the current 1.3.13 Beta, if you start with an empty project, record a 10-seconds track starting at zero, stop, place cursor at two seconds, record for four seconds (starting from two seconds) in the new track, stop, then...
- Click above the mute/solo buttons to select the second track
- OR Double-click inside the four-seconds clip
- OR Select the first second of the four-seconds clip
The only exception should be if you have silence (a flat line) or some other audio in front of the audio you want to export. If so, just select the segment you want to export and File > Export Selection. As Koz said, that should always work.
If you are still stuck, please ALT + PrtScr to take a screen print of the Audacity window, open Paint, Paste, Save as PNG, then upload the image with your reply using "Upload attachment" underneath the message "Preview/Submit" buttons.

Re: Overwrite Tracks
Okay so that worked, thanks for the tip.
It's unfortunate that there is no easier way to do this though, as I had to make seven seperate saves

If the tracks you are exporting contain nothing other than the content you want to export from them, then you can doBrachamul wrote:Okay so that worked, thanks for the tip.

File > Export Multiple to export all the tracks in one go and there should be no offset of the exported files. An arrangement like this where you recorded each snippet in a new track:
should not produce offset files.

Re: Overwrite Tracks
I'm not sure i understand what you mean by offset.
When i tried exporting multiple, i ended up with short wave files that did not all start at my precious time zero.
