Resident noise-Shows on Rec meter

Post by LJE » Thu Jul 21, 2011 6:47 am

Had Audacity for a while with previous software, Ubuntu 9.10, and not a problem. Recently changed to Linux Mint 11, got a fresh download of Audacity, with a seemingly inbuilt problem. -- On pressing the record button even with no signal applied, one hears a faint chaff like sound which registers on the record meter; both channels. This occurs even with both turntable & amplifier completely turned off. No other hardware items have changed. -- Running Linux Mint 11 in a 1.8gig AMD cpu system. -- 2gig of ram, now suddenly these probs I never had before. -- Took me a bit to get Audacity to work at all. Had to change something in Preferences. Not sure if all is well here. Seems to be unripe fruit maybe.(?) --Rgds.

May be bad hardware--noisy cable, dirty connection...sound card->mobo etc.. It is not likely to be in the Audacity code. Have you tried any other recording app?

Checked all that. - Gone over all plugs etc with clean cloth & WD40. - No improvement. - Have also sprayed out the source-monitor switch on the amplifier. -- Have always noticed that moving the software's volume control slider invokes a bit of chaff & crackling, like a dirty (real world) volume control potentiometer. -- Ubuntu did this also.

The build of Audacity that is distributed with Linux Mint is significantly modified from the original Audacity source code. Any issues that are specific to Mint should be directed to Mint as we don't know exactly what modifications they have made.

If it's just a short "chaff" at the beginning then I'd be tempted to just ignore it. Leave a bit of "pre-roll" time before you start recording, and trim off the chaff after you have recorded.

The crackling while changing volume settings is probably because the drivers for your sound card are not very efficient, or it could be a limitation of the sound card itself.
I notice the occasional small click when adjusting the volume with one of my sound cards, but not with my (better) sound card.
You would not normally adjust the level while you are recording. Set the level before recording (Click on the Recording meter to enable it, then set the level so that the loudest sounds register at about -6 dB). Adjust the levels as required after the recording is done. You may find the Envelope tool useful: http://manual.audacityteam.org/man/Envelope_Tool

O.K., Thanks all for the ideas. - I think I may start with a much better sound card & take it from there. -- This seems to be the most obvious cause, and place to start. -- Thanks.
