Ripping Audio from a DVD

Post by Kristette » Sun Jun 26, 2011 1:58 pm

I want to use Audacity to extract the audio from a DVD - full-length films and episodic DVDs - is this the appropriate software and where do I begin?

Thanks :)

Audacity is probably not the best tool for that, though it will probably work for DVDs that are not encrypted.
You would need to use Audacity 1.3.13 and also install FFMpeg, then Import the VOB files from the DVD (usually best to copy the VOB files to your hard drive first).
Audacity 1.3.13: http://audacityteam.org/download/
FFMpeg: http://manual.audacityteam.org/index.ph ... tallffmpeg

For dealing with encrypted DVD, see the Doom9 website.
(Note that copying commercial DVDs may not be legal, even for personal use)

Even if you do rip the files, you still have to figure out which ones are the AC3 Surround and which ones are the PCM Stereo, assuming the movie has one. We regularly produce Stereo AC3 hybrid files to save space and many movies do that, too. Now you need a way to decode the Dolby AC3 stream.

You could also just record the computer's sound while it's playing the movie.
