How to soften sound that starts out too harshly?

Is there an easy way to do this?

Yes.

But we're going to need to know a lot more about it. Are you overloading the sound channel? Do you have a bad microphone? Who's the performer and where are they? What's the sound and how are you listening to it? Is a sample of the sound posted anywhere we can listen to it?

This is in reference to a progression of chain sounds in two of my iOS puzzle games. These chain sounds were generated using cfxr. Each of the chain sounds starts too harshly (too much of an attack).

Perhaps you could upload a sample somewhere to illustrate what you mean.
