Relative newb in Linux and audacity

I am new here and new to audacity, however I do have several years of Linux use.. mostly ubuntu and variants such as mint. Right now I am running mint 9 kde edition.I have been trying to record a radio stream with audacity (listening in VLC) and it is nothing but frustration..I have so many sound server options to choose from (none of them work properly) and I get to where I think it is working and it crashes...The info. I am trying to record is extremely important to me and others and yet, a task that seems relatively simple is a freaking nightmare and causes my blood to boil and the overall experience is extremely poor. I can do this in windows till the cows come home..not even a burp...I hate MS products and do not support them in any way, so I really need this to work under Linux. I have an ASUS board with intel HDA sound and like I mentioned , it works flawlessly in windows 7. I know this software is free and I appreciate all the massive efforts by those who provide this, but I can't justify spending hours and days trying to get something this easy to work.
