Add a built in real time clock

Post by Macanan » Tue Feb 08, 2011 11:43 am

There needs to be a built in real time clock so we will know at what time to the second of any EVP or such that was recorded, that way if there is anything ell's that goes on at the moment in time we can correlate them with the EVP. :)

Someone else looking for a surveillance system? What's an EVP?
How long are your recordings?

You can buy SMPTE timecode generator/readers. These machines maintain very good time of day accuracy and produce, if you get the right one, an audio signal which can be recorded on one channel of Audacity with the surveillance work on the other. Play the show into the Time Code reader and it will tell you to excellent accuracy when the event happened.

One of the "problems" with Audacity is it's running inside a computer which may have absolutely no idea what time it is, either.

If you're really into pain, you can get a multi-channel sound card and supporting software and put the SMPTE on channel three or four.

SMPTE is a robust sound signal and was designed to survive the cue track of quadruplex tape machines. It's used for frame-accurate edits in multi-hour long shows.

I'm guessing "Electronic Voice Phenomenon" but I really wish people didn't use abvs.

That's the crucial question.
With standard consumer grade sound card the accuracy of the recording speed should be within a couple of seconds second per hour, and a decent sound card designed for music should be a lot more accurate than that.
