Post by mhagar2 » Tue Nov 30, 2010 10:13 pm

Ok..i've read everything i can about recording music and voice seperatly....i can import the mp3 for the music and can hear it when recording but the second track that's supposed to be recording has no imput. I've changed the imput to "microphone" but nothing registers on the sound meter even when clicking on "monitor". I'm stumped...i have no signal for the microphone. help!!

How are you connecting your microphone to your computer? Exactly what kind of cable and to what input port?

My mic is plugged into my mixing board and then it goes into the line in input of the computer via 1/8 plug.

In that case you need to be recording the Line input, not the Mic input.

Just so i understand....i record off the line input.. but the tracks will still remain seperate...in other words, one track would be only vocals with no music and the other will be just music with no vocals. I am trying to sing against a mp3 but when i put effects on the track i don't want to re-master a track that already is.....i just want to put effects on the vocal track.

The instructions on how to seperate the two tracks say that you have to set the input in Audacity to microphone (up on the screen by the input volume slider) I import the mp3 on the first track and the instructions say i have to have only the mic active? If it's on line-in, it brings the music with it. I want to listen to the mp3 and record a vocal track without the music on it and merge the two into one song. Is this possibe?

Which instructions?

It sounds like you have your Windows sound control panel set to "what you hear" or something similar. This would explain why the MP3 music track is recorded along with the voice.
