Potential bug: Instability when recording streamed media

Post by reed1e » Fri Nov 19, 2010 9:53 am

I have been recording a BBC Radio 2 series (Jazz Junctions, total recording time c. 60 minutes) via the BBC iplayer on the beta 1.3 version. I check it's recording OK at the start of the recording and then periodically and all seems to be going well. However sometimes when the recording has finished I'll find that the first and/or last 20 minutes or so has dropped off the recording. I typically have to repeat the stream two or three times to get a complete recording. On the last occasion after it failed I tried it with my 1.2.6 version and that recorded without a hitch, implying that there is an instability in the beta version rather than a problem with my system.

I'm not sure of this is the right place to report potential bugs in the beta versions but couldn't see an obvious link for bug reporting.

I'm running:
Vista Home Premium SP 2
4GB Ram
Intel Core 2 Quad cpu Q6600 @2.4GHz
HDD 500GB with 200GB free

I fairly regularly record strreams from the BBC site Audacity 1.3.12 on Windows XP-PRO-SP3 and these always record fully with no problems.

Which version of 1.3 are you using?

What do you mean "dropped off"? do you mean that the last 20 minutes or so is silent?
Is this an unattended recording? Are you sure that when this problem occurs that iPlayer is actually playing the last 20 minutes?

If you got a nice velvety 20 minute silent stretch, then the bitstream dropped off. It happens here every so often, but it is pretty rare, since I have DSL. It happens more often to the Digital Cable people who have screaming fast connections -- as long as the neighbors don't decide to download 3D HiDef {word rejected}. Their connection is shared.

if you are using vista
i would not jump to the conclusion
that the pc is fine and the problem is audacity

*lots* of things going on in there that could cause that problem
