Voice recording I want to email. I have switched it from stereo to mono, but that didn't cut at all. I have zipped it, but that only cut it to 29MB. I have been through the manual & tutorial but can't find out to split it into 2 separate recordings, Part 1 & Part 2. Any other ideas? Thank you in advance for any help you can give me.

Also, when you export the audio file you can export as MP3 (assuming that you have LAME installed) and when you get to the Export screen that shows the Export format, click on the "Options" button to set the amount of compression. The lower the kbps/quality, the smaller the file, but it is a trade-off between file size and sound quality.

sending a file that big is a hostile action

for files that big use file transfer
or
park the file at a free site
and send a link so the receiver can download it

29MB would *kill* my email permanently
i would have to call the help desk and have them manually delete your file

you could split the file into 30 x 1MB files
PITA but at least my email wuold still work
and my pc would not lock up trying to dl that original 30M thing

That one bothers me a little bit. You have a show on the timeline and it clearly has two tracks like this...

Tracks > Stereo Track to Mono

This should give you a display with one set of blue waves instead of two. If you export that show, the filesize should be almost exactly half. I do this every week. Reducing to mono is a classic and sometimes "invisible" way to reduce a show size for transmission. This only works in Audacity 1.3, by the way.

Fortunately Hank is not proposing to send the e-mail to you.
The file size limit on Gmail is currently 25MB. Because it is web mail the user can download the attachment as/when and if they choose. I would assume that the sender and recipient are in agreement about the transaction.

Only when exporting in an uncompressed format. When exporting in a lossy compressed format, the bit rate (and hence the file size) remains the same irrespective of the number of audio channels (see here: http://forum.audacityteam.org/viewtopic ... 194#p93189 )

yes, a large % of the world is still on dial up
and
email was never intended for file transfer

norton would take hours if not days to check that email before i actually saw it -- assuming the line didnt drop, or something else go wrong to make me start over

not everybody has high speed available
not everybody wants to deal with telco and their dsl filters
or
the cable company - that goes out with regularity
or
satellite - which only works in the winter when it is not raining
or fios - "that is fios that is *expensive*" - they are arrogant and annoying

the OP is solving the wrong problem
use the better easier cheaper faster way to send files
not try to force email to do something it was not intended for

i would not assume that.
way too many idiot relatives and former friends have tried to shove large files down my emails throat. camera club, professional groups, whatever, none of them think about the problems with time andor security.

Not necessarily. Most good e-mail clients allow you to view the e-mail headers before downloading the full content. Configuring your e-mail client that way is invaluable if you have pay-as-you-go or limited band-width/download limit.
