1.2.6 files incompatible with 1.3.3?

Post by suburbanDK » Wed Aug 22, 2007 12:09 am

I've just started to try 1.3.3, and opened one of my projects created via 1.2.6;
I get
"The file was saved by Audacity 1.2.6 and the format has changed. This version of Audacity can try to open it,
but there may be problems. You should backup your project, to be safe. Would you like to open this file right now, anyway?"

Sounds ominous, am I flirting with disaster?
Should I maintain a project in only version from beginning to end?

thanks, DrDave

DrDave,

ther is forwards compatibility, but not backwards compatibility - i.e. files that are created in 1.2.x can be opened in 1.3.x, BUT once opened in 1.3.x thay can no longer be opened in 1.2.x. Files created in 1.3.x cannot ever. be opened in 1.2.x.

So what the message is trying to tell you is that if you may ever want to go back to your project in 1.2.x format at the time when you propose to open it in 1.3.x - then you should take a back-up copy (under a different project name). Of course if you do revert to the 1.2.x copy then you will lose any 1.3.x edits that you made.

If you are worried about the stability of 1.3.x then it would be a sensible idea to take a copy of the 1.2.x project anyway. Having said that, personally I now only use 1.3.x and so far it has proved well stable for my needs (transcribing and editing LPs tapes and radio shows).
