Recording to WAV on a Linux alsa system, I recently noticed when I bring waveforms into Audacity (1.2 or 1.3) that they are not vertically centered on the "0" line. When I amplify the tracks, they become even more off center--http://www.tastysoftware.com/audacity.png.
I posted this question a few weeks ago but the board seems to have been upgraded recently (and my user id and postings deleted).
I have been using Audacity for years on various versions of Linux and I've never seen this problem before. I wonder if it had to do with a hardware upgrade. Is this a hardware thing or a software issue? What does it even mean when the tracks are not aligned? Thanks for any tips!

Re: tracks not vertically aligned
It's a hardware problem. It's called a 'DC offset' and is common among consumer audio hardware. You can usually remove it by using the Normalize plugin and checking the "remove DC offset" box.

Thanks! That seems to fix the problem.
