Re: New Vinyl Getting Skips
Are you passing the signal from the pre-amp through an external USB soundcard - or are you going straight from the pre-amp to the Line-in on your computer and thus using the onboard soundcard?
When you say you get a large blue line I assumne you mean you are not getting the blue wavy images of the waveform in the track?

is the vinyl stereo? if the original were mono you still get mono. perhaps two channels of the same mono but not stereo.prosser99 wrote:... The sound was good but I didn't get stereo.

But I want plenty of volume when I record my vinyl. ....
Provided you have a good clean signal with a low noise floor and you get the Audacity waveform -6dB (for dB scale) - then you can alwways pump up the volume afterwards with the Amplify effect. I normally take mine up to -1dB. >>
May not need to start that high.
I record at -24 and when copying most commercial lps or cassettes there is plenty of floor after i normalise to -1 -----
the point is that you do not need to record high and risk clipping. you can always amplify or normalise to make it hotter. and compress it too if you want to fight in the loudness wars.

The signal is going from the tt to the pre-amp to the sound card to the lap top. I've got stereo in my headphones but not Audacity. Maybe be I have to configure the pre-amp in control panel? It - the pre-amp - is not showing up in devices.
On another question, what needle would you recommend for a Marantz 6150? Thanks Prosser

This "sound card" is it a USB external soundcard? If so what is the make & model no?prosser99 wrote:The signal is going from the tt to the pre-amp to the sound card to the lap top. Google would have to be my friend here - but I would be looking for an elliptical diamond stylus designed for vinyl. What you buy usually depends on teh cartridge that is fitted - unless, that is, you are looking to change your cartridge.prosser99 wrote:On another question, what needle would you recommend for a Marantz 6150?

The sound card is a Behringer UCA202. 2 in 2 out USB audio interface with digital output. Prosser

Re: New Vinyl Getting Skips
Stevethefiddle (a regular contributor to the forum) successfully uses a UCA202 to record - so we know they work well with Audacity.
It could be a bad USB connection - you can't try a different USB lead as I believe that one end is hard-wired into the UCA202 - can you give the USB plug a gentle wiggle in its socket on the computer - can you try a different USB socket. You're not usin a USB hub are you.
Other thought - you may not have the correct settings on your UCA202 - or mis-matched settings between it and Audacity.

Re: New Vinyl Getting Skips
I didn't have the stereo selected in edit/preferences/audio/channel. So that works. But now, after playing around with gain trim, amplify, and bass boost, no matter what I try, the drums are much further in the background in the recording then they are playing the record (I got a new needle to go along with the pre amp. The sound is excellent like you said. But its not coming across in the recording.) And I also got a big hiss and rumble from the pre-amp. I reduced it with the gain trim but it leaves a week signal. When I add amplify the drums are just not normal in the recording. Getting frustrated. Might just get a high end USB Turntable. Prosser

Re: New Vinyl Getting Skips
I'm still not clear what you are trying to say. Are you saying that Audacity is getting no signal? Are you seein the bouncing meters and the blue waveforms?prosser99 wrote:The sound is excellent like you said. But its not coming across in the recording.
And that might just get you a whole new set of problems ...prosser99 wrote:Might just get a high end USB Turntable. Prosser

Re: New Vinyl Getting Skips
Why would you want to go for a USB turntable? You already have a Marantz 6150, an Artcessories DJ pre-amp and a UCA202 sound card.
That combination should be better than most, if not all, the USB turntables available out there.
How are you listening to it, when it sounds excellent?
When you say it is not coming across in the recording, do you mean that the quality when you play back the recording is not good? How are you listening to the playback?

That means the turntable and preamp must be working properly, if it sounds good at some point in the chain.prosser99 wrote:The sound is excellent like you said. But its not coming across in the recording.
