I am volunteering for librivox, I noticed that when I download files, if my sample bit rate is set to 16, then I see the files as 16, if it's set to 32-bit float, I see the recording as 32-bit float. Librivox asks that all recordings be in 16 bit, how do I know what it is really set to?

does it really matter?
cant you set them to 16bit
and their preferred sample rate too
when you export the final file?

should be set in edit preferences quality
but maybe also a box while you export

Audacity has an annoying habit of changing the project specifications depending on the specifications of the first imported music file.

Depth/Rate Conversion
-- Change Project Rate (Hz) lower left > 48000
-- Track Name > Set Sample Format > 16-bit PCM
-- File > Export > Format > Other uncompressed File Types

This process is a lot easier in Audacity 1.3. 1.3 will allow to change some of these specifications directly at the export step. See Whomper.

The intent is that the Audacity Project specs and the specs of the music you need to edit will match before you start editing. If they don't, the program starts acting a little schizophrenic.
