Drawing on Beta

Post by PLecso » Sat Jan 05, 2008 2:30 am

I am new to Beta having used the stable program for the last four or so months. I prefer to draw out the clicks and other unwanted sounds on my recordings, mostly of jazz albums. My problem is that in Beta as you magnify the sound waves, the grid pattern shows up and obscures a great deal of the sound wave. While it is not enough to cover up a click, the grid is large enough to obscure smaller sources of unwanted noise. I have two questions:
1. Is there any way to get the grid off of the screen. I'm unsure of why it is there in the first place.
2. For those of you who also like to draw out unwanted noise, how are you doing this in the Beta version?
Thanks

There is a great new effect in1.3.x called Repair - this enables you to select up to 128 sound samples, then Click Effect/Repair and Audacity will do the redrawing for you by interpolating from the neighbouring waveforms.

The Repair effect was one of the key reasons I moved from 1.2 to 1.3 several months ago - in 1.2, like you, I used to do manual re-drawing. Repair is much easier and quicker to use.

But recently I have acquired an excellent piece of software called ClickRepair - it costs $40 but gives excellent results (see my thread on it in the Audio Processing section http://audacityteam.org/forum/viewtopic.php?f=28&t=1994). I have used this on older jazz albums with excellent results.

Which version of the program are you using, and which Operating System?

I've never seen this grid and I can't find an option to turn it on anywhere.

In the stable version there are no lines on the waveform. In Beta there is a black horizontal line along the zero decibel level. When you magnify the waveform to the point where the drawing tool becomes activated, the line is more prominent than the waveform and it obstructs your view of the waveform. There is little point in having the drawing tool if there is a heavy line blocking your view of the line you need to redraw. The prescence of the line makes the drawing tool almost pointless.

I see what you mean. There is one thing you could try, but I'm not sure it if will work as well as you'd like. You can click on the track's name (this is a drop-down menu) and change the display to 'Waveform(dB)'. It might be easier to re-draw the wave with that display format.

Note that this does not change the audio at all, it just changes how it's displayed.

I tried the decibel view but the drawing tool only works in the linear view. I think I will record in stable, do the click removal in stable and then import the file into Beta.
