I presume that you are trying to record sounds that are playing on your computer (such as sounds playing in your web browser). This is the only reason that you should choose Stereo Mix, so if this is not what you are wanting to do, please tell us what you are trying to record so that we can give the correct advice.

Step 2

Control panel > Sound > Recording > Select Stereo Mix as the default, then click the Properties button.
On the Levels tab set the level fairly high (you can try setting it to maximum for now, then come back later to lower it if necessary).

When you record Stereo Mix, it will record everything that is playing on your computer. The recording level depends on both the "recording level" that you have just set, AND the playback level of whatever is playing. You therefore also need to adjust the playback volume level of the thing that you are recording.

To avoid recording noise from other inputs (such as the microphone, system sounds, CD, Line In ....) you need to mute all of the outputs that you are not wanting to record.

Tip: In Audacity you can activate the recording level meter by clicking on it (right click to view the current status). This allows you to set your recording levels correctly - the level should never go up to maximum (0dB) - for recording internet audio, aim for a maximum of around -3 to -6 dB. You can amplify the recording later if you need to.

Remember to reactivate the built in mic if you are going to use Skype or any other VOIP service.

<<<if you are going to use Skype>>>

You might not need to with Skype. Skype is pretty vicious about setting itself up and it doesn't care what anybody else thinks. That's why it causes so many problems with machine setup for other programs.

Hi Guys,

I've set my 1.3 Beta up, and its recording streamed audio from my web browser but with terrible echo. To the point where it builds on itself to deafening levels. I can kind of get around this by having the record and wave levels really low, but then the recording is barely audible. Any help????

1) Ensure that "software playthrough" is switched off. (Transport menu)

2) Ensure that you are using headphones and not speakers.

Thank you Magnusbush, but why pay $30 for that software, from a company with no registered address or telephone number and has only been in existence since March 2nd this year, when it can be done in Audacity for free?
BTW, what part of China are you from?

To record streaming audio from webpages you can use firefox browser with some free plugins such as DownloadHelper (I think there are others, but I've successfully used that one a few times with no complains)
Include as much details as you can in your post (Audacity version, Operating System, Equipment used, etc).
Please post your question in the appropriate forum (regarding audacity version and operating system).

Hi

I have been using Audacity for quite some time. Recently, I got a new IBM Thinkpad Windows XP laptop. I have been trying to record streaming audio that are playing in a webpage with Audacity's latest version 1.3. I was able to do so in my Windows XP desktop before this with older versions. The options of "Stereo Mix" is not there to choose from which is why I can't record streaming audio with Audacity. If I record, I have to do it with microphone which catches noise from the surroundings which results in poor quality of recording.

Can anyone please help me how to record audio streams from online with Audacity 1.3 in Windows XP laptop computers?

Thanks!
