Entering "k" in labels scrolls WAV panel

Post by RodBarnes » Tue Nov 24, 2009 3:19 am

Odd thing. I was typing an entry into a label (it is still up on my screen). I entered "Than" then typed "k" and the wave panel scrolls all the way to the right!? If I type the next character (space), the "k" does not appear but the space does and I can continue typing. If I cursor back to try and enter the "k" again, it repeats the behavior (scrolls the wave panel all the way to the right). It absolutely refused to allow me to enter a "k". I had to enter the text elsewhere an then paste it in to get it correct.

Running Vista x64, nVidia 9800 GT, double monitor.

Which version of Audacity are you using? This is a known bug (the "k" key is the shortcut for move cursor to end of track), but AFAIK it has not been seen in 1.3.9.

Testing version 1.3.9. I did search for something trying to see if this was already known but didn't find anything in my search.

The issue is listed as a "P3" in the "Release Checklist http://wiki.audacityteam.org/index.php? ... _Checklist
The note that accompanies it is:
"Not reproducible to order, but very likely to occur with large numbers of labels in a track. Once it occurs, typing "j" or "k" in any label in that track will move the cursor to start/end of the track."

(I've not seen this problem myself, but I rarely use many labels).
9/10 questions are answered in the FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS (FAQ)

FYI: In one instance, I had this happen on the 7th label entry but it did not happen on the 2nd label entry. In another, it happened on the 3rd and subsequent labels.

As this bug is "not reproducible to order" it's been hard to track down.

As a work-around, go to Preferences > Keyboard and either set different shortcuts for the commands that use the J and K keys without a CTRL or ALT modifier (there are four of them under the "Edit" category - SHIFT+J, SHIFT+K, J and K), or, if you don't use those shortcuts, just clear them.

Would it help to have a particular file with which this occurs and the steps to reproduce it? I have steps where I can cause this to happen every time in v1.3.9 regardless of the WAV I import:
  • Open Audacity
    Drag in a WAV
    Wait it to be rendered
Go to the start of the waveform
Type Ctrl-B to create a label
Enter "thanks"; press Enter when complete.
    Press backspace, then Ctrl-Z
Click at any point in the waveform.
Type Ctrl-B to create a label
Enter "thanks"; or try to, anyway. :?

Press backspace <- this deletes the wav and label tracks if "Select all audio in project, if none selected" is checked in Tracks Preferences. Otherwise, if "Select all audio in project, if none selected" is not checked, nothing happens
then Ctrl-Z <- only needed if tracks were deleted
Click at any point in the waveform.
Type Ctrl-B to create a label
Enter "thanks"; or try to, anyway. :? <- works for me, no trouble entering the second label

I have confirmed a case where the "K" and "J" key issues occur without having linked tracks (see attached). However, I also found that when I selected "View -> Fit Vertically", the problem disappeared.

Just more data to help isolate the problem.
