Delete the per-user configuration file:
Windows: Documents and Settings<user name>Application DataAudacityaudacity.cfg
OS X: ~/Library/Application Support/audacity.cfg
Linux: ~/.audacity-data/audacity.cfg

For 1.3.3 on Linux, the file is definitely ~/.audacity-data/audacity.cfg, meaning /home/<username>/.audacity-data/audacity.cfg normally. It's a hidden directory, so you won't normally see it in a graphical file manager, or the output of ls unless you use the -a option.

There is a perfectly good 1.2.6 source tarball for Linux on the audacity website. If you mean is there a binary package for your distribution, I suggest you look on the package search site for the distribution.

Richard,

some clarification here please. I have Audacity accessed from two different user names on Windows XP home. But there only appears to be one .cfg file on the pc - the user that was used to install Audacity.

Your reply, sub-quote above, implies that there should/could be one .cfg per user of Audacity.

And since I have both 1.2 and 1.3.3 installed - and only one .cfg - does that mean that the .cfg file is common to both 1.2 and 1.3 - so changes that I may make in 1.2 will affect 1.3 and vice versa.

Any insight you can cast on this will be much appreciated,

WC

There should be one audacity.cfg per user account, except in the case that one of the users has not made any changes to the preferences (in which case there would be nothing to write out to the file).

You can check what configuration file your are using from within audacity, in the Help > About dialogue.

Audacity 1.2.x doesn't use a .cfg file, it puts stuff in the registry, so the ,cfg file only affects 1.3.x beta versions.

Ah... that explains a lot - thanks for that insight Richard.

Does that mean that in 1.2 you cannot easily revert to the Audacity defaults?

Also I presume that since there is no Audacity Un-install functionality - then once you have installed 1.2.x and made changes to preferences - then you will end up with registry settings that can only be removed by manually editing the registry (serious dark magic - that I prefer to stay away from ....)

Essentially yes, although there is a .reg file here which resets the registry settings to safe defaults (merge settings into registry).

Willl using the registry utility you referenced cause any problems in Vista Home Premium?

The reg file should be safe in all versions of Windows as it simply merges with existing Audacity registry entries, however the Audacity wiki warns:
Modifying the Windows Registry can be dangerous! Before modifying the Registry, always back it up or set a System Restore point on XP or Vista. To access System Restore, click Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > System Restore.
Most Vista users report that Audacity 1.3 works better on their machines that Audacity 1.2
