Can't listen and record in mono!

Post by PRIMO » Mon Jul 14, 2008 11:58 pm

Unable to play back and record at the same time in mono. Works in stereo but not mono. Can record multiple tracks in mono if the playback is off. Tried to tweak the settings and imput/outputs but got nowhere in a long time of trying. HELP!!!

The only thing that you should change is in "Edit > Preferences > Audio I/O" - Change the "Channels" setting to "1 (Mono)".

Tried that! The message says:
error while opening sound device. Please check the input device settings and the project
sample rate.
Or it locks up. Only if playback is checked. Does this in stereo too! This is with alsa. With oss there is a loud consistent beep that is heard during playback of a recording. Of course with the play while recording button off or it won't record. I can record with Alsa and without the beep but not with the play while recording on. this is with the Audacity 1.3.2 beta running on Puppy 301 . Help!

Oh yes, a well known and much feared error message :)
Seriously though, this means that Audacity cannot communicate with the selected audio device driver with the selected audio options. I've often come across this when trying to use unsupported sample rates, but never from just switching to mono.

Audacity 1.3.2 is pretty old now - is that the only version that is available from the Puppy repository?
Audacity is now up to v. 1.3.5, and there have been quite a few changes for Linux users. Note also that Audacity uses Portaudio and that has gone through some fairly major changes for Linux users.

There are a few options you could try for getting up to date versions of Audacity and Portaudio, including, checking the official and unofficial PET packages, or trying a Slackware packages (though there's no guarantees that this will work), or building them from the source code.

Thank you for the reply. Most of the problems turned out to be a hardware issue. The constant beep, or the wine was a bad power supply and the fan bearing failing. Also had some bad ram loaded. All but the playback during mono issue was resolved but who cares. I can alwayse record in stereo and then cut out 1/2 of it. Thanks for the help.
