No input switch

Post by Jim Isbell » Thu Jan 24, 2008 3:30 pm

I am running Audacity on Linux (Freespire) and cannot get any input to the software.

Using the mixer in Freespire I can set the sound card up to record and playback from the Line or Mic input to a wav file on HD and to the sound card output using KRecord and Kplayer. So I know the sound card and cabling are correct.

But the switch for the input in Audacity does not appear on the upper right. The options in the Edit/Preferances/Audio I/O section are OSS and ALSA. I am assuming the ALSA input and output are the correct ones to select.

There are several options on output and I have selected all at one time or another but am assuming the
ALSA: VIA 8235: VIA 8235 (hw 0,0) ...or....ALSA: VIA 8235: VIA 8235 (hw 0,0) is the correct one.

On input there is only ALSA: VIA 8235: VIA 8235 (hw 0,1) ......or........OSS: /dev/dsp. I am using the ALSA setting

BUT, when I press the record button, I ALWAYS get the message "Error while opening sound device. Please check the Input Device settings and the Project sample rate."

The sample rate is 44100 and its set to 16 bit and stereo

What am I doing wrong???

The usual setting is "ALSA (Default)".
However very occasionally it needs a different ALSA setting. The sample rate may also need to match the default sample rate of your hardware (it took me ages to realise that on my machine it had to be set at 48 kHz, but now it works perfectly).

I just tried every setting but Other and none of them worked. I dont know how to find out the number for my machine or I would try that in Other.
