Mix recording problem

Running xubuntu 9.10, and set everything up. I get an error that says "error while opening sound device"
I have a
│ Card: ESS ES1978 (Maestro 2E)
│ Chip: SigmaTel STAC9721,23

I bet you are not running Audacity 1.2.x

Instructions vary depending on the version of Audacity.
