Audacity 1.2.x is now obsolete. Please use the current Audacity 2.1.x version.

Mac 0S X 10.3 and earlier are no longer supported but you can download legacy versions of Audacity for those systems HERE.

Can't encode to MP3 via LAME

Post by ImagoX » Thu May 07, 2009 2:02 pm

Running Audacity on a Mac Air (OSX)... Downloaded the LAME encoder and installed the "libmp3lame.dylib" file to "Desktop -> LAME Encoder", then directed Audacity to this file (had to switch awat from "LameLib" to "*all files" to get OSX to use the file.

I get a warning "Audacity was expecting to find a file "LameLib" - are you sure you want to use this file?"

I say yes, and immediately get a warning "Cannot convert to MP3".

What am I doing wrong? I'm following the steps as listed in the Help file - it seems like I have the wrong file, sinc eit really wants "LameLib" and not "libmp3lame.dylib". But I used the right file download link for my OS. Please help?

PS - running Audacity 1.2.6 on Mac OSX 10.5.6 running on a 1.6 GHz Intel Core 2 Duuo CPU.

Thanks!!

The Lame is perfect. You have the wrong Audacity.

OK, so I installed the 1.3.7 version, but now my only Input Source in the drop down is listed as "Internal Micrphone". Is this right?? Haven't even tried encoding yet, as I haven't yet captured my audio source. ;)

EDIT: Nope that's wrong - I can convert to MP3 now using libmp3lame.dylib (thank you), but my source files are only able to record from the internal mic, which means that the sound is crappy and it picks up background hiss and other sounds. Do I need to go to an older (but more stable) version instead, so I can capture audio direct from the sound card stream?

Thanks!

Did the new Audacity ask you "English?" when you started it the first time? If it didn't, then you are still using the old Audacity preference settings and that could cause problems.

Close Audacity and trash the audacity.cfg file. Mine is in...

Users > koz > Library > Application Support > audacity > audacity.cfg

You might just trash the whole folder. Audacity will rebuild it the next launch.

OK, now for the new problem. What exactly is the sound source other than the built-in microphone? Be painfully specific.

I trashed the entire Audacity folder in Users -> Username -> Application Support, but I still did not get prompted for English when I restarted Audacity. I tried searching the entire Mac HDD for "audacity.cfg" but got no other matches. Hmmmmm...

I HAVE NO other sound sources listed other than "Internal Microphone" - that's the only option in the Source drop-down box, as well as in Audacity -> Preferences -> Audio I/O (where it is listed as "Core Audio: Built-in Microphone". I'm not sure what it *should* read, but I remember when I was running 1.2.x, it said something different, and did NOT use the internal mic - whatever I had before did not record background noise. Sounds now like it's recording the audio coming out of my speakers with the built-in mic in the case, so it's tinny and picks up noises I make at my desk.

You only have a clean install if Audacity asks you for a language at First Birthday.

Trash Mac Audacity Preferences
http://audacityteam.org/forum/viewtopic ... =10#p34670

As a side concept, you can "reinstall" Audacity any time you want by trashing that file (once you find it). You don't have to take anything out of your Applications folder. The actual software very rarely becomes damaged. However, the preference file gets dinged all the time.

<<<whatever I had before did not record background noise.>>>

What did it record? We're still looking for a goal. I want to record...?

Well, I saw the .CFG file, and trashed it AND the entire "Audacity" folder in Applications folder. After I re-launched Audacity, the folder and the .CFG file were re-created, so that indicates to me that I was deleting the right folder. Where ELSE would it be? I'm at a loss.

When I record, it DOES record sound, but it's using the MICROPHONE built into the case to record the sound coming out of the SPEAKERS (which sounds like crap - this is a Mac AIR after all, with a dime-sized speaker)- it's not recording the audio stream itself. That means if I mute the speakers, it records nothing, but still picks up background noises that the microphone hears; if I clap my hands, it records the sound of my clapping; and it hears the sound of the television playing behind me. When I record using Audacity on my PC, it uses the audio signal that's coming out of the stereo mixer, and does NOT use a microphone of any kind, since I do not select that source. This means that any sound I can play through my speakers, I can record cleanly with Audacity by choosing the stereo mixer as the source, or I can use a mic if I want to, say, record a live performance.
