Can't download (mac os 10.5.6)

Directions say to not hit save to... and that it will automatically download. It didn't. I tried the direct link and several mirrors without luck. What am I missing?

Perhaps nothing - it may have been a temporary glitch on the Sourcforge website. Have you tried again? Can you try with a different web browser (your web browser may be blocking the download).
Also, probably worth try Audacity 1.3.7 rather than the old 1.2 version.

I have absolutely no experience with this type of software so I was put off by the warning that new users should get the old one. I'll be brave...

That's something of a hang-over from when Audacity 1.3 was first started and was subject to many pioneering, but not necessarily stable innovations. The 1.3 version has been pretty stable, though with a few hiccups since about version 1.3.4.

Since 1.3.6 Audacity has been in a feature freeze and are now squeezing any remaining bugs out of it ready for the long awaited Audacity 1.4. All the regulars on this forum now use 1.3 as it has so many improvements since the 1.2.6 version was released (well over 2 years ago).
