Can't get MP3 conversion started

I have Audacity 1.2.5 installed on my Intel iMac. I am running OS 10.4.11. Audacity successfully copies and then plays music from an LP, but I have not yet succeeded in creating an MP3 version of it. Any attempt to export in MP3 format gives the error message:

Export MP3. Audacity does not export MP3 files directly, but instead uses
LAME, an MP3 exporting library available separately. See the
documentation for more information.

Would you like to locate libmp3lame.dylib now?"

I have downloaded and printed the Wiki instructions. They tell me to "go to the instructions for LameLib-Carbon-3.91.sit, Lame Library v3.98.2 for Audacity.dmg or libmp3ame-osx-universal-3.97.zip."

I have downloaded "Lame Library v3.98.2 for Audacity.dmg." Safari automatically decompressed it and opened "Lame Library v3.98.2 for Audacity.pkg" I double-clicked on that latter item, and I was told that it was properly installed.

Yet the Wiki instructions next tell me that, "This will install the LAME binary "libmp3lame.dylib" in /usr/local/lib/audacity." But I could find no such file and no such "usr" folder.

I did a "SPOTLIGHT" search for the "libmp3lame.dylib" file. It showed up in the search, but when I hovered the cursor over it, it report that the file was in the trash. Yet, when I opened the trash can, there was no sign of it there. The same thing happened when I did a "SPOTLIGHT" search for "usr" folder. It too was reported as being in the trash, but it wasn't.

I have searched in every way I know, and I cannot find the "libmp3lame.dylib" file. And since the Wiki instructions do not spell out the path completely from the root, I can't find find the file, and therefore I can't create MP3 files.

I'm more than even sure that you have the wrong lame file. That's the file I have and I'm on a PPC G4, not an Intel machine. Everything has to match.

They scrambled the Mac installers a while back and lost me completely. Did you download the .dmg file for Audacity 1.2.5?

Did the installer make you put your password in?
