Audacity 1.2.x is now obsolete. Please use the current Audacity 2.1.x version.

Mac 0S X 10.3 and earlier are no longer supported but you can download legacy versions of Audacity for those systems HERE.

audacity version

Post by tango5 » Mon Mar 30, 2009 2:57 pm

OS 10.4.11 emac stanton T90 USB turntable.

I have only just got into LPs to digital and have downloaded audacity 1.2.6
I can hear whilst recording and playback okay.

Q: Do I need to update to version 3? If so, what are the advantages?

Q: Also is lame's ONLY purpose to enable to export MP3s?

1.2.6 is fairly old now - and despite the "Unstable" labelling on this forum 1.3.7 is pretty mature and stable now. I have only used 1.3 for a while now both for LP/tape digitization and FM broadcast capture. A couple of key benefits for your application include much improved label handling and the addition of the Repair effect.

Yes, that's correct. As a MAC user I'm guessing that you are using iTunes for yoy library/jukebox. If so then don't bother with MP3 - export as WAVs and import those into iTunes as AAC (bitrate for bitrate AAC is generally reckoned to produce better quality than MP3)

And welcome to the world of Audacity and digital music

Thanks for your reply.

I have just downloaded 1.3.7.1 and it seems to be working okay.

All I have to do now is learn how to use audacity, I'm 80 and things don't come easy now!

I won't need lame because I convert selected itunes to MP3s to 320 bitrate....they sound okay to me.

I hope 'United' stay on top!!

Have a read of the Audacity Tutorials and tips - the links are at the top of the Audacity forum screen

I don't !! Although I now live in the Manchester area, I am really a Southerner - and a Brighton & Hove Albion supporter. And as you are 80 you can probably cast your mind back to 1983 to the one and only Cup Final that Brighton ever got to - where we held United to a draw on the initial match (and almost won - remember the famous commentator quote "and Smith must score ..." - only to be denied by the excvellent goalkeeping of the United keeper, Bailey). United then fielded a much stronger side for the replay and destroyed us, taking no prisoners !! So I am one of the many that hate United.

BTW there are plenty of Mancs who don't like United either - those from the blue faction in the town - the City supporters :)

I have just had printed the 1.2.6 version....is there much difference between that and I.3.7.1?

I'm going to see if there is a video of this software...a picture being worth a thousand words etc.

I don't remember Brighton & Hove of 1983. I'm a Leicester man but left for Toronto 1957. I see they are doing okay this year.

Cheers, tango5

lots of improvements - label handling is much improved - new toolbars have been added - a good new Effect called Repair has been added - on the download site you should find a page with all the differences listed - just found it, see this page: http://audacityteam.org/download/features-1.3-a

Re an audacity tutorial. Here is one that might help people like myself even though it is done on a PC.
It is much simpler to understand. Hope it helps someone.

I wonder if it's possible to write back to the author of the video. There's an error in the presentation and it's pretty common, and sometimes fatal to a show.

There's an e-mail link just above the video.
I'm not sure which "error" you are refering to, but it may be worth mentioning here at least that "Normalizing" will not cure distortion that has occured from recording at too high a level. (It's important to avoid recording too loud rather than trying to fix it after).

On the whole I thought it was a nice gentle introduction to using Audacity.

Perhaps you can post this error you refer to.
