MP3 exporting plug-in - Help?!

I have tried what sounds to be the simple solution to exporting to an MP3 file by downloading the LAME MP3 Plug-in. But when I open audacity after installing the plug-in and it searches for the lame file I find it in my applications folder, inside the audacity folder, then inside the plug-ins folder but the file libmp3lame.dylib is grey not black.
I'm new to the iMAC and don't understand all the ins and outs so go easy on me. I'm using Mac OS X version 10.5.6 and Audacity version 1.2.6. Thanks for your help!

No, this one catches everybody. You have an Intel Mac, right?

Apple > About This Mac > Processor > Intel..

Your lame program download and install is perfect. You have the wrong Audacity. Intel Macs take Audacity 1.2.5.

D'Oh!

This combination isn't the most stable in the world in spite of the labels. I would also install 1.3.7 in case 1.2.5 starts acting wacky. You can install both safely as long as you only use one at a time.

Exported Sound Files will open up anywhere, but 1.3 saved Projects will not open up in 1.2. Neither version will Save a sound file.
