On an Imac 10.4.11 Intel Core 2 Duo I'm recording but only with the live internal mic. I'd like to use a live audio signal I'm receiving off a Pal Talk class I'm involved with. Any Ideas. The only option on the record drag down menu is Default Input Source. thanks tons..

Macs only have one "microphone" input and that's the built-in device. They have no provision for plugging in an external microphone.
Options are Line-In (like to record from your iPod, sound mixer, or guitar amplifier), USB, or FireWire, the last two being direct digital.
What do we know about this Live Audio Signal? New Macs have that Line-In on the side or back and you can select that in Apple > System Preferences > Hardware > Sound > Input. You might also need to set Go > Applications > Utilities > Audio MIDI Setup.
Stick to 44100, 16-bit until you get your legs. While you're in System Preferences, make sure the show registers on the panel's little bouncing light sound meter. If you don't get any lights there, you're pretty much dead.

Koz - That was awfully kind of you. Thanks. The Live Audio Signal mentioned is actually a signal off a live internet feed, a course we receive on the virtual side of the computer, so its not live in the room, but real time live. Can you tell me how to access a line signal for recording purposes on the virtual side? I can't get the levels to come up on the meters as a line in and don't know where to look.
Thanks again Otterby.

So you don't really have a live recording where you can reach out and caress the mandolin strings and thump on the drum. You just want to record the computer's show.
Macs don't like to do that.
I have a license for WireTap which will record anything running on my Mac. Highly recommended.
If you really like difficulty and stress, you can download SoundFlower from the Apple web site. That works too, but it's harder to use.

Remember, it's a dialog. Which one worked for you?

Koz - Right now we're using audacity, a free program that has a few problems and recording it through the live mic, this weekend we're going to try wiretap and I'll keep you posted. Again thanks for your interest. Otterby
