delay when monitoring in headphones

is there a way to remove the delay i hear in my headphones when i am recording into a mic? i have tried checking off both hardware playback(no levels at all) and software playback(levels but with delay in headphones)

You are listening to "One Computer Late." Sound takes that long to get from one side of your computer to the other and no software adjustment is going to fix that, probably. You might want to try Audacity 1.3. 1.3 has better delay and management controls than 1.2 did, but it's still not going to work magic.

What kind of Mac do you have?

i am using an imac.
yes i am also using audacity 1.3
funny thing is when i was using my old powerbook G4 i had no delay in the headphones and that was even using 1.2

Mess around in Apple > System Preferences > Hardware > Sound > Output. See if rational things are selected as far as you can tell.

Do you run Skype or Vonage? They're both pretty vicious about building audio pathways their own way. How about SoundFlower or WireTap? Both of those get a vote as to where the sound goes.
