can i hear what i am going to record before hitting record
i was using audacity 1.2 on an older mac powerbook G4 and it let me listen to what i wanted to record even before i pressed record. now i am running the newer audacity 1.3 on my i mac and it wont let me listen to what i am recording before i press record. what can i do?

The settings that control that are in...
Audacity > Preferences > Audio I/O > Settings at the bottom of the window.
You may need to restart Audacity for the settings to take affect.

are you referring to the playthrough settings? i have tried all variations of the playthrough settings and still nothing.

Your Mac may be trying to send the show out the wrong spigot.
Go > Applications > Utilities > Audio MIDI Setup.
Apple > System Preferences > Hardware > Sound > Output.
I can't tell you what those are going to say, but they should be rational. Don't send the signal out the USB connection when you're not listening to the USB connection.
