How do you do this ? I want to split CD s into named tracks without having to record and save each track separately.I had heard that it is one of the excellent features of Audacity. Can't find it in the toolbars or menus and Help seems to be all about screenshots.........
Help please!

Put a label (Apple-B) at the beginning of each song you want exported as a single and then File > Export Multiple > WAV.
That will give you a pile of high quality songs to pull into iTunes, create your playlist with the songs in it (in the order you want), and burn the list.
Wait for iTunes to tell you when to put the blank CD in.

OK, thanks for that. What I want to do is export it first as a AIFF to burn straight to CD and then import into iTunes as MPEG which iTunes will do nicely. The reason I'm doing it this long winded way rather than straight import into into iTunes and copy the CD with Toast on the computer is that its a scratchy CD which my iMac won't read - it gets stuck on a track and gives up, whereas it plays fine on my CD player and imports through Audacity no problem. What I was hoping to do was press a button and Audacity would determine the individual tracks which I could then name individually. Is this what you have given me the instructions for? If so please reply "Duh...." and I'll try harder to work it out! Thanks for your time, Pete

You got a number of steps in there you don't need.
Set Audacity preferences to 44100, 16-bit, Stereo, and set iTunes Import Preferences to the same thing (write down where they were). Those are the quality numbers of the music on a CD.
Cable the CD player straight into the Line-In of the mac and capture the whole disk in Audacity.
Mark the songs and export to individual WAV files. Import each one to iTunes (at the new WAV or AIFF settings -- same thing) and burn to a CD. That will be as close as you can get to a lossless, perfect, undistorted transfer between two CDs. No MPEG, no AAC, no compression, no damage, and no craziness.
After you get that far, then you can put your iTunes preferences back to normal and bring the pile of WAV files in again in AAC format for your iPod. AAC, M4A MPEG,and MP3 are all compression processes that reduce the file size by damaging the sound.
Then, after you get one (or two) CD copies, take your damaged CD to the sink and scrub it with a rag in normal dish washing detergent and barely warm water. Rinse, dry carefully and try to play it again. If it still skips (should be less), take toothpaste and water and gently scrub the surface of the disk, rinse thoroughly, dry, and try it again. I have only lost one music CD in my life and that one had a gouge in it the size of a public park in Arizona.

Thanks Koz. All makes sense and I will give it a go. Go well!
