32-bit Floating.......wait...what?

Post by kozikowski » Mon Jan 19, 2009 7:25 am

Audacity 1.2.5
Mac OS-X 10.4.11

I got a 32-bit floating WAV file at the wrong time.

I made an AIFF, 48000, 16, Stereo sound file in WireTap Pro. It was the easiest way to capture the sound from a complicated video edit session.

I opened it in Audacity 1.2.5. Audacity preferences are 48000, 16, Stereo.
The little block at the bottom says 48000.
The DropDown menus claim 48000 and 16 bit.
The TimeLine Announcement on the left claims 48000, 16, Stereo

I finished cutting and Exported a WAV. I got a really large file which turned out to be 48000, Stereo, 32-bit Floating.

???

I restarted Audacity and it did it again.

When I open up the 32-bit file in Audacity, it says 32-bit in the Announcement on the left.

I got the 16-bit work out the door with QuickTime Pro export services. Then I opened the new 16 bit file in Audacity and exported an MP3.

Then, as an afterthought, I opened the new, edited QTPro 16-bit WAV file in Audacity and exported it as SomethingElse.wav. SomethingElse.wav arrived as 32-bit floating....

Right out of Twilight Zone, isn't it?
