Audacity 1.2.x is now obsolete. Please use the current Audacity 2.1.x version.

Mac 0S X 10.3 and earlier are no longer supported but you can download legacy versions of Audacity for those systems HERE.

L channel only on RCA recording

Post by b-nimble » Tue Dec 30, 2008 7:53 pm

Hi. (I'm running Aud 1.2.5 on a desktop Mac OS X 10.5 Intel duo core). Reading this forum has helped me through all the WAVE to MP3 and crumby ION USB stuff (THANKS VERY MUCH)... Now I'm using the RCA line out which has neutralized the static/feedback issue of the USB connect, but it is only recording on one (the Left) channel....I initially get both channel levels to "bounce" when I click on them (as per Koz instructions), but then only the L reads during record/playback (older USB recording still play back on both channels). Granted one channel is better than intolerable feedback, but it is not ideal....... Any ideas (solutions) for what is happening. Thanks.

Hey, addendum to earlier post..... I am using a Radio Shack Y adapter audio cable (42-2546) to whatever the other adapter is called that enables a stereo plug to jack into the back of a Mac...... also I just record the same track twice once using USB and once using RCA, played both tracks back on my Ipod, and the RCA is definitely only recording to the Left channel (The USB recorded/played back in stereo) ......

Just to cover the obvious first, Audacity wakes up from First Birthday in mono. Left-only. Did you change it in Audacity Preferences?

Let's assume you did. Launch Audacity and click once inside the red record meters. Nothing will happen (this is actually a program failure we're working on).

Now pull the RCA cables out of the turntable and holding the cable by the plastic cover, touch the RCA metal tip with your other hand. One of the red record meters should wake up and bounce. You are intentionally creating audio trash as a test signal. Now touch the other one. Same thing. If you get one but not the other, then there's something wrong in the cable or computer. If everything works fine, then the signal isn't coming out of the turntable.

Did you save your receipts?

Koz,

Thanks for assistance. I switched out the 2 part Y adapter with another single unti Radio Shack audio adapter (#274-369), and that seems to have taken care of the issue.
BTW, not sure if creating test noise on the leads is an option on this model ION, the RCA cables are hardwired inside the deck housing (not plug in). Or maybe I just couldn't follow directions.
Happy New Year.

No, you're right, you can't follow Koz' instructions in this case as you correctly point out the cable is hardwired inside the ION.

Sounds like you just had a faulty Y cable - glad you got it sorted (neat looking little connector that RS #274-369 - and less wire training around), happy recording ....
