hello, is it possible when you have numerous files in a project to, if you have to edit say the second file and make it shorter, to move all the following files up to the new end of second file together? meaning that you wouldn't have to shift everything forward one by one and check all the links, fades, stitching together of files all over again. anyone know please?

also, is it possible to play through a project and when you press pause and then stop for the cursor to still show across all files, so that you would be able to shift a file towards the cursor position that might be way down the project?

does this make sense? so difficult to explain...

You can do that in the 1.3.x version of Audacity.

You can set a "marker" using Ctrl+M (or whatever the Mac equivalent of that is).

I've not got a Mac, but I think that you should be able to do it.
On Linux and Windows, you can select multiple tracks by selecting an area on one track, then holding down the shift key, click on the other tracks. Alternatively, you can "drag select" with the mouse across multiple tracks.
When you use the Time Shift tool, all selected audio clips will move together (not just the selected regions, but the complete audio clips as long as at least a part of the clip has been selected).

"M?" I thought it was "B" on all platforms.

Apple Audacity 1.3.5 has it as Apple-B.

The B sets a label at the current selected cursor position - you would normally do this while recording/playing is stopped - but if you need you can do it while Audacity is recording or playing

in contrast

the M as Steve says sets a marker, and this is placed at the current play/record position while Audacity is playing or recording - it is just a label that is created - but the ability to place one at the dynamic position where Audacity currently is while playing or recording can be immensely useful.

I use the M marker to place temporary labels in shows that I record off-air to mark the approximate beginning and end of the music tracks - start label with a track id - end label with a "end" - them with a zoom to fit screen it is easy to roughly cut out the bits I don't want - just leaving to require sections to work on.
