I'm using 2.1.6 on powerbook (having lost about 30 hours of work on audacity 3 last night). When I import wavs, they all have extra dead space at the end. It's a lighter shade of grey than where the file actually exists, and has no wav form in it. The cursor stops when it gets to it. However, I cannot delete it. When I copy the part of the wav I want and paste it in a new audacity project, the dead space comes with it. When I export the selection I want as a wav, the dead space comes with it (or I end up with silence instead). The wavs work and do not have this dead space when I play them in itunes. I cannot complete--or even really restart--the projects that I lost last night.

If I can't use audacity (as I'm rapidly losing hope), any other suggestions of a program I could use?

You might have the wrong Audacity and that's why it doesn't work right. This is the information I need from you and where to find it. This example is the machine I'm typing on now. There is no Audacity 2.1.6

got the number reversed...audacity 1.2.6 on a 867 MGz PowerPC G4 running OS X 10.4.11

Could you post a screenshot.

I have marked on the image the end of the track. The area to the right of this is nothing - it does not contain any audio data. This is normal. (you may need to scroll the image to the right).
Also, a quick tip - when posting images, use .jpg, .gif or .png format. A lot of browsers do not support .tiff images.

Yes, I know it looks like that, but I can't paste other audio over it, nor can I hear audio in other tracks beneath it when I add them. They'll play when they're under the top audio track, but not under the blank space.

I can't remember exactly how Audacity 1.2.6 handles those situations, but if you use Audacity 1.3.x it should play audio clips wherever they are placed on the time line.

Note that you can only paste audio of a similar type into a track - you cannot paste stereo audio into a mono track, or the other way round.
