Low volume on MP3 exports

I can record into Audacity and everything is fine volume-wise. When I export into an MP3 file, the volume is extremely low. I've tried equalizing the tracks before exporting, but it doesn't seem to matter. Does anyone have a clue regarding this low-volume issue. It's a pretty dramatic decline. TIA.

And it's higher or lower if you Export As WAV instead?

If you reimport the MP3 into Audacity, does everything return to normal, or you still have a damaged sound file--low waveforms?

Very good questions. Let me try exporting something as WAV.

OK, I tried a couple of things. First of all, the volume was low on both WAV and MP3 files when I exported. However, I did an "amplify" operation and then exported and things were MUCH better on both WAV and MP3. I'm not sure why, but apparently the loudness of recordings within Audacity just appear to be higher than when they're exported. I think this will work for stuff in the future. Thanks for the ideas.
