Audacity 1.2.x is now obsolete. Please use the current Audacity 2.1.x version.

Mac 0S X 10.3 and earlier are no longer supported but you can download legacy versions of Audacity for those systems HERE.

Problems importing from iTunes

Post by Kimbersan » Thu Aug 21, 2008 1:28 am

Hello! I am a brand new Mac user and I am learning how to use Audacity to edit my songs for slideshows, etc. I am having a problem importing a specific audio file from iTunes. The songs from my previous library play fine, but the song I want to work with was downloaded from the iTunes Online Store. I import it and it shows up in the edit area, but when I press PLAY, I hear a static sound and then it stops. What is wrong and how do I fix it?

Thanks in advance!!!!!! KP

First, the song has copy protection on it and second, it almost certainly is encoded and compressed in AAC audio instead of MP3. Audacity will not manage AAC audio files.

Create a playlist with your song in it and burn the playlist to a music CD. Then bring the CD back in to iTunes with the iTunes import preferences set to high quality MP3. Those songs should be available for Audacity.

I appreciate the suggestion! I will try that. In the meantime, is there a way to create it into an AAC file? I paid for the song through the iTunes Store and intend only to use it for personal projects. Thanks for any info you can give!!!

<<<In the meantime, is there a way to create it into an AAC file?>>>

It's already an AAC file, that's the trouble. In addition, it has Apple FairPlay protection which means you can play the music as many times as you want on your Mac and copy it over to your iPod and play it there until you turn blue. You can make, I think it's five Music CDs with the song and then FairPlay cuts you off at the knees.

That's how FairPlay works. You can investigate SoundFlower which lets Audacity record the sound output of the Mac (in real time), or you can buy WireTap which will do the same thing with a much easier interface. As long as the song is in the Mac, you're pretty much stuck. That's why pulling the song outside the Mac works.

You can push the song to your iPod and then play the iPod headphone jack into the Line-In of your Mac and record it in Audacity. That's the analog pathway that works if you need the song bad enough.
