Audac.1.3.3 w/Firebox: how to configure settings to record?
Forum rules
Audacity 1.2.x is now obsolete. Please use the current Audacity 2.1.x version.
Mac 0S X 10.3 and earlier are no longer supported but you can download legacy versions of Audacity for those systems HERE.

Audac.1.3.3 w/Firebox: how to configure settings to record?
installed Audacity 1.3.3 on Mac OSX cpu, attempting to use with the Presonus Firebox.
Anyone know how to configure the settings, to record?
We have set the audio input source on the computer to the Firebox.
Signal is coming into the computer but not into Audacity.
Thanks for any help!

Is there a particular reason you are using 1.3.3? Are you running OS X 10.3? If you have 10.4 or higher, I'd recommend the latest 1.3.13 beta. Once we get that sorted, we can talk about configuring Audacity to recognize the Firebox.

Go to Audacity > Preferences, then the "Audio I/O" tab of preferences. Under the "Recording" heading, what are your choices in the "Device" drop-down menu.

drop-down menu has only one option: core audio: built-in audio.

Re: Audac.1.3.3 w/Firebox: how to configure settings to reco
Try Apple > System Preferences > Audio > Hardware > Input. Does it show up there?
The device has it make it past the computer before Audacity gets a crack at it.
Select it, or see if it doesn't show up at all. If not, then the device isn't arriving at the computer. Change cables, try a different computer or different FireWire connection.
And, if you're really running Audacity 1.2....
Audacity 1.2 is very old and no longer supported,
patched, corrected, or updated. Audacity 1.2 can
be unstable on newer computers.
Download and install the latest Audacity 1.3 from here...
http://audacityteam.org/download/
You can install both audacity 1.2 and Audacity 1.3 on
the same computer, but only use one at a time.
Audacity 1.2 will not open projects made on Audacity 1.3.
If you use MP3 or some of the more modern audio
compression formats, get Lame and FFMpeg software
from the same web site. Do not use older software
or software from other web sites, even though they
may have the same names.

Signal is coming into the computer but not into Audacity.
I was using an earlier version of Audacity (that did not support the Firebox drivers) but just upgraded to 1.3.3 in order to be able to record using the firebox. Sound is coming through the Firebox, into the computer and I can hear it, but can't record in Audacity.

How can you hear the input from the firebox? OS X does not provide playthrough, so I'm curious how you're doing that.hipsterdeath wrote:Sound is coming through the Firebox, into the computer and I can hear it, but can't record in Audacity.
I can test Audacity 1.3.3 on OS X 10.5 PPC with a USB interface (sorry, no firewire interface). 1.3.3 crashes when I stop recording from the USB interface. Is there any chance you can upgrade your OS to 10.4? I think that would probably solve your problems, as you would then be able to run Audacity 1.3.13.

Re: Audac.1.3.3 w/Firebox: how to configure settings to reco
Panther is pretty seriously behind the times. We finally had to stop using our corporate Panther machines for production editing. The tools just weren't there for editing needs.we're running 10.3.9, thanks...
There have been complaints of going past Tiger with Motorola machines, but if you're OK with it...
The Audacity versions 1.3.11 and before all had relatively serious problems. The first wildly popular Beta version was 1.3.12 and thousands of installs were successful. It had failure modes, but none of them were likely to endanger general productions. 1.3.13 is the carefully constructed current version based on 1.3.12.
Do you have "magic" machines? Skype? Other editing programs? Sound Flower? WireTap? You can tell by our deer-in-the-headlights look that you have a strange set of symptoms. That usually happens when you have a complex machine. Audacity likes running on relatively simple machines.
