no "preferences" option
I've been fighting for a month to try to record a guitar. First I tried with an Ubuntu system, but with the weird sound settings in Ubuntu, I couldn't get a consistent signal into the computer to record, although Audacity seemed to be working fine with it. So I moved on to my Mac laptop. I downloaded Audacity for mac, installed it, and plugged in the amp. It seems to be working fine, but it is recording in mono for some reason. Okay, I thought, probably a setting needs to be changed. No problem, right? Well, it seems I have no "preferences" in this version of audacity. Is this a standard thing? I've searched and searched on the internet and on forums, but I can't seem to figure out what I'm doing wrong here. Is it in a different place in the Mac version? I've clicked everything I can click and looked at every drop down I can see on the software, and nowhere does it say "preferences." On the versions I've used before (both windows and linux), it was under the "edit" drop down, but it isn't there. Any suggestions? Should I be looking for an icon instead of the word (I've clicked all of the icons that are open, though)? I'm ready to smash the guitar and both computers.
Re: no "preferences" option
Okay, I figured it out. It isn't under "edit" as it is in the other versions. Preferences is under the "Audacity" drop down, which seems excessive to me. I don't use the mac often, so I wasn't expecting an unnecessarily extra drop down. I guess it was assumed if I'm using Mac I know their quirks. Good old mac; they have to be different from everyone else--to a fault. This, and the fact that their equipment is less powerful, and generally has less functionality and compatibility but it costs at least 1/3 more than windows based machines, is why I don't like Mac.
But anyway, off of my soapbox. I was afraid I had a bad download, but the problem is solved.

If they upset you, you should stop using them right away. Macs aren't for everybody. They're notoriously unstable and difficult to use.is why I don't like Mac.
Preferences is under "Audacity" because that's where it is in every other Mac program. Firefox, Photoshop, iTunes, etc. It's under "Edit" on Windows machines.
