vu meters

I closed off the vu meters by accident. How can i reset them?

Can you actually close the VU meter window in 1.2.x after you've floated it?
Anyway, in 1.2.x choose View > Dock Meter Toolbar.
In 1.3.2, choose View > Toolbars > Meter Toolbar.

You should probably be using Audacity 1.3.12 from here:
http://audacityteam.org/download/
Audacity 1.2 is no longer supported particularly on newer Macs. If you have odd behavior, the oddness is going to get worse.
You can install both versions safely, but only use one at a time. Audacity 1.3 Projects will not open in 1.2.
