Hi,
Im new to Audacity. I am trying to use it as my sample editor in AbletonLive. I have 10.5.3 and an Edirol FA-101. When I open Audacity as either a stand alone or through Ableton, it imports the wave files fine, but when I go to playback, it prompts me with the message "Error while opening sound device. Please check the output device settings and the project sample rate." I've checked all the preferences in each program and on my mac itself. However, when I change Audacity's I/O settings to "built-in" inputs and outputs it works fine. Has anyone encountered this problem? I feel like I'm on a PC!!!!!! Thanks

Audacity 1.2.x is now obsolete. Please use the current Audacity 2.1.x version.
Mac 0S X 10.3 and earlier are no longer supported but you can download legacy versions of Audacity for those systems HERE.

<<<When I open Audacity as either a stand alone or through Ableton, it imports the wave files fine,>>>
Let me rewrite that to what I think you meant.
When I open Audacity as either a stand-alone sound capture program or a sound capture program through Ableton, it captures the sound data just fine and exports a working WAV file.
I know you know what happened, but we are a complete slave to your English words.
<<<Error while opening sound device>>>
Last time my Mac did that to me, I gave it the best possible blank look because I have no sound devices. I did discover, however, that Audacity had taken it on itself to change the number of sound channels to four. A plain Mac will not play four channels of sound. Check Audacity Preferences.
Assuming the Edirol is a USB device, make sure Audacity isn't trying to play back out to the Edirol. That one's in Apple Preferences.

Actually this particular Edirol decice is Firewire not USB - but I still suspect that Koz is right and your computer is trying to use the Edirol as the sound output device.kozikowski wrote: Assuming the Edirol is a USB device, make sure Audacity isn't trying to play back out to the Edirol. Re: Error while opening sound device
Thanks...
The edirol is firewire...
I want to use the edirol as my output, otherwise I have to use two sets of monitors, one for ableton (output routed through edirol) and one for audacity (through the mac built in device.)

Re: Error while opening sound device
So what you're obliquely telling us is that you have two different systems struggling for the same audio output device. I bet if you uninstall the Abelton, Audacity will start working.
