Listening and recording simultaneously?

Please give me a very direct and simple answer for this, I have looked at others and they don't make sense.
How do I listen to my previous recordings whilst recording simultaneously?

I would highly recommend upgrading to Audacity 1.3.12
http://audacityteam.org/download/beta_mac
Playback of existing tracks while recording should be enabled by default in Audacity 1.3.12, but if for any reason you find that it is not enabled, you just need to select "Overdub" from the bottom of the "Transport" menu.
