File name changes

When I typed in the file name "Miller Family Christmas 1971 (b)" it came up as "Miller Family Christ#7DA148". The data file kept the original name, so when I tried to open the file I got an error message: "Can't find data file "Miller Family Christ#7DA148" . When I changed to name of the data file to match the aup name it came up ok, although it was the bak rather than the original aup, which apparently was lost. What happened? And how do I prevent this?

Stop using illegal characters in your filenames. Upper and lower case letters, numbers, underscore, and dash. That's it. Any other character can cause problems, particularly if you need to move work between different computer types.

Being compulsive and needing to move work between all the computer types over many continents, I don't use spaces either -- but that one's negotiable.

Dates are particularly evil. Today is...

20101203, not 12/3/10

This is also a limitation in 1.2.x that was removed in 1.3.12. Do yourself a favour and get 1.3.12

Could be. Could also be that the filename is 32 characters - I think 1.2.x had a 31-character limit.

Is 1.3 available? I thought it was still in beta?

That's a sore point. If you have an Intel Mac with 10.5 or 10.6 OS, The Stable Audacity is Unstable and the Unstable Audacity is Stable.

No, they won't change it. I have an Intel Mac that won't run Audacity 1.2 at all.
