Static occurs when recording on macbook pro

I have been encountering static while recording from an ion turntable using USB connection. The static is unpredictable,as I have been able to make several successful recordings. I have moved cables, reloaded 1.2 and 1.3 and restarted Audacity with minimal success. When I first purchased the turntable, I used a Dell PC with no problems. I don't think this is a turntable problem, but am at a loss to figure it out. As a matter of fact, it's performing well as I write this. I have read the posts concerning using the RCA outputs (as opposed to USB), but am confused as to where the input is on my Mac. Any ideas?

I am having the same problem. It will record 10 albums with no trouble, then start the static about a minute into a new recording. I can't get it to stop. I am using Mac OS X 10.5.2, Audacity 1.3.2 BETA.

Once you get unstable performance (noise), you're pretty much dead.
