Getting a line in from my amp to Mac PB
Hi - new user, and just a little short on knowledge of all this. Have tried taking a line out from the back of my amp (Tape Out via 2 RCAs to one headphone jack and then to headphone jack on Mac. I know that this jack is not powered and therefore will not operate as a line in. Therefore got Griffin iMic and went in via usb. Have done all the selections in preferences but still no luck. The whole reason for this is to capture my vinyl on the laptop in MP3. As I do not have a phono jack on the amp I thought I could do it this way or through the video input on the Mac PB. Any ideas gratefully received. Ta.

I'm presuming you're using OSX (rather than 9). If you're iMic is plugged in, and you open the System Preferences, and then the Sound page, go to the Input tab and the iMic should be listed there. Choose it and you can then record through it. The iMic has no software to install that I'm aware of so it should just show up in the Input tab. If it isn't listed there, then I don't know what to do. My iMic shows up automatically.

Wait, wait. You're making my head hurt.
Which PowerBook? Mine is a 1.5GHz G4 and I record Line-In all the time. The "Line Level" audio input connection looks like a headphone socket, except the icon is two black arrows pointing inward on a circle.
Let's start there. We want to not use an iMic if at all possible. They don't have the best reputation for sound quality and can be finicky to use in Audacity.

Hi Jack and Koz,
Have had this line in problem before using the headphone jack on the side of the PB - it is a known issue with headphones. Mine is a 500MHz G4 running 10.4.11. Problem is Mac will not recognise an external mic/line in in system prefs - sound - just internal mic and zoomed video for some reason. Is this because I need a sound card or some other gizmo? Thanks for your support in my quest.
