1a. When I download the “LADSPA plugins installer” from Audacity’s main Mac download page and unpack the resulting swh-plugins-0-4.15.dmg, the system puts them somewhere, but not in the plugins folder in the audacity folder. They cannot be found under “swh” or “plugins”. Where are they or how can I make them work?
1b. When I download VST plugins (such as from http://mda.smartelectronix.com/effects.htm) and put them in the plugins folder myself, they do not show up in “effects” once I restart audacity.
Obviously, there is something I do not get in either of the two approaches…
I am on OS 10.5
If you could also email me to [email protected], I would appreciate that.
Thank you
Thomas

Re: Plugins Installation
Sometimes, the standard Audacity install is a bit scrambled. I don't do it that way.
I create an empty folder called Audacity and drag it into the /Applications folder. After you explode all the operating files from the Audacity download, drag them, folders and all, to /Applications/Audacity. If you do the lame download and explode, put that result in /Applications/Audacity.
From then on, put the plugins in /Applications/Audacity/plugins, etc. etc.
Drag the Audacity program icon to the toolbar (if you wish) or you can just run it from the folder.
It should be much easier for Audacity--and you--to find the plugins and other software.

ReRe: Plugins Installation - one solved, one to go!
I DID create an Audacity folder in Applications and put the VST plugins in the plugin folder and put a whole folder with VST extension plugsins there, but they did not show up.
BUT: Once I took them out of the folder and only put the individual files into the plugin folder they DID. Hurrah!
As far as the LAPSPA package from the main MAC download page: The dmg contains an installer package and only heaven knows where the files go after it installs them, as they do not show up in a search for “swh” or “plugins” or, say, “flanger or convolver”, two specific effects. I do not know what other names to search for!
If I drag the installer into the plugins folder first, the files still disappear who knows where. You might want to try it yourself.
THANK YOU!

Re: Plugins Installation
Do you have OS-X set to display filename extensions?
Desktop > Finder > Preferences > Advanced > Show All File Extensions.
After you do that, you may find that you don't have to "install" the tools. They're already in a form suitable to drop straight into the plug-ins folder. [VerySpecialEffect.ny]

ReRe: Plugins Installation - LAPSPA installer package
As I said: you might want to try it yourself. The LAPSPA dmg (@ http://ardour.org/files/releases/swh-plugins-0.4.15.dmg) definitely contains an installer pack (with the pkg extension), NOT just the files. Hard to mistake.
In case you know who wrote this package, I could ask him/her myself...? Is it Steve Harris, who wrote the documentation for it?
