have you by any chance got the project format set to 24bit audio?
If so, try changing it to 16 bit (or 32 bit) - some macs seem to have problems with 24 bit.

Sounds like you need to reset Audacity.

To do this you need to remove the Audacity settings which are stored in an "audacity" file in your Library. If you need more information about how to do that you'll be better off asking kozikowski as he is a Mac user and i'm not.

Windows Preferences are burned into the Registry. Abandon Hope Ye Who Enter...

If it's still unstable, delete this preference file and reinstall Audacity from a fresh download.

I personally create an empty Audacity folder on my desktop and drag that into /Applications. After I explode the download file, I drag all the files and folders into that folder. Launch Audacity from there or drag the icon to the tool dock. After that, all the plugins go into the plugin folder. I put the exploded lame file in the top of the folder : /Applications/Audacity/

Apparently, we've been able to get a lot of people out of trouble by doing the install that way.
