I have a mac os x (10.5.8) and after converting my audacity (1.2.6) files to wav I burned a CD-R with the file. All I got on the disc when I put it in a conventional CD player was loud buzzing and no music file. I tried again with the same file in mp3 and again all I got on the CD was the loud buzzing. (When I open the rcorded CD's on the mac, it opens the audacity file and plays the music just fine
What am I doing wrong?

Audacity 1.2.x is now obsolete. Please use the current Audacity 2.1.x version.
Mac 0S X 10.3 and earlier are no longer supported but you can download legacy versions of Audacity for those systems HERE.

Re: unplayable CD recordings from audacity files
You are probably making a data CD instead of an Audio CD. Check that your CD burning software is set to make an Audio CD.

Re: unplayable CD recordings from audacity files
When you slip a blank CD into a Mac, it opens after a short dialog on the desktop. It's ready to be a Data CD and accept any files, music or not, that will fit. Two Photoshop pictures and an Excel spreadsheet. Sure, why not? You can put music files on there, too, but that doesn't make it a Music CD. It makes it a thin, silvery hard drive with some music files on it.
Open your music in iTunes, create a PlayList and drag the music to it. The PlayList will allow you to arrange the order of the music.
Click Burn Disk from the little prompt lower right, accept the speed dialog and read the instructions in the center-top window. Then put a blank CD in.
That will produce a correct Music CD that will play in any CD player -- even the one in your mom's Buick.

recording 78 rpm
Can anyone give a clear description for an amateur of how to record a 78 rpm using Audacity 1.2.6?
My turntable only records at 33 1/3 and 45 rpm.
I have Mac OS X 10.5.8. Do I need to upgrade my Audacity program and if so what is the best Audacity upgrade for the Mac OS 10.5.8?
